Facilities Management: Summer 2018 Campus Construction Projects

According to a Facilities Management presentation made on April 5 to members of the President’s Cabinet, multiple construction projects are scheduled to begin on the University of San Diego campus this summer.
In and around Serra Hall alone, four projects are slated for a summer start. Two first-floor renovations — an expanded behavioral neuroscience lab and a newly imagined math department space (see video above) — will occur. A second-floor improvement for the anthropology area and for Serra Hall’s South Facade will happen.
An exciting project for Mission and Ministry and for the Founders Hall area is brewing as an addition and partial renovation of the north end of Founders Hall is scheduled to begin this summer. A new multi-purpose building is scheduled to begin construction in the east patio area. Currently in design and submitted for permit, the goal is to start in the summer and for construction to run through Spring 2019.
The final phase of utility work on the north road is scheduled this summer. The replacing of all utilities in the north road, correcting any deferred maintenance and support upcoming projects are the objectives. Construction this summer will result in road closures north of Founders and Camino halls.
Missions A and Crossroads will have some summer improvements. The final phase of a six-year construction contract to fire sprinkler housing buildings is taking place. There will also be the addition of fire sprinklers, an upgraded fire alarm system, repainting, new flooring, installation of ceiling fans and more.
The Hahn University Center’s first floor restrooms and associated locker room will be renovated, too.
In addition to projects that are starting this summer, construction will continue through the end of the summer on the Loma Hall Annex’s second phase. The project, which involves converting the former site of the Torero bookstore into Shiley-Marcos School of Engineering classrooms, labs, offices and meeting space, has been underway since the beginning of 2018.
