Digital Changes Spawn New Health Careers

U-T San Diego -- This electronic approach to health care has opened up a new field called health care informatics, creating careers where none existed five or 10 years ago.

These are workers who specialize in the intersection of digital information and health care delivery — using computers to find trends in gigabytes of electronic health care records or helping health providers implement new technology, from medication bar code scanners at the bedside to wireless blood pressure monitors in patients’ homes.

Laura Custis, a nurse for 30 years, wants to be one of them. She recently enrolled in the medical informatics master’s degree program at the University of San Diego’s Hahn School of Nursing and Health Sciences. (Full Story
