Tom Reifer, PhD, Associate Professor of Sociology, had an op-ed article, “Secrets, Lies, & Propaganda: Hollywood’s Zero Dark Thirty, America’s Liberal Culture of Torture, and the Struggle for its Abolition,” that appeared in the Transnational Institute online journal, January 5, 2013, pp. 1-57. He also took part in a radio interview on "Zero Dark Thirty and the Culture of Torture" with Telepolis, Jan. 2013. This article in German is published at http://www.heise.de/tp/artikel/38/38464/1.html .

Reifer has also had an essay entitled “The Reassertion of Race, Space, and Punishment’s Place in Urban Sociology and Critical Criminology” published in Environment and Planning D: Society and Space, 2013, volume 31, pages 372-380. The essay is a review of the following books: Great American City: Chicago and the Enduring Neighborhood Effect by Robert J. Sampson (Chicago, IL: University of Chicago Press, 2012, 552 pages, $27.50 cloth, ISBN 9780226734569) and The Collapse of American Criminal Justice by William Stuntz (Cambridge, MA: Harvard University Press, 2011, 432 pages, $35.00 cloth, ISBN 97806740515751).

Dr. Reifer was a panelist on “Power, Politics, and Prose: W.E.B. Du Bois, Black Reconstruction, and the Origins of World-Systems Analysis,” at the 50th Anniversary Commemorative Conference on W.E.B. Du Bois and the Wings of Atlanta: A Commemorative Conference at Clark Atlanta University, Feb. 20-23, 2013.

Reifer participated in “Priorities for the New Pope: What Does the Church Need Most Today?" a panel discussion on the Papal Election and Priorities for the New Pope sponsored by the Frances G. Harpst Center for Catholic Thought & Culture at USD, March 20, 2013.

On a panel honoring the work of David Graeber, Reifer participated in the International Political Economy Section Outstanding Scholar-Activist Award session at the International Studies Association conference in San Francisco, April 5, 2013.

While in Atlanta for the W.E.B. Du Bois conference, Reifer also presented “From Civil Rights to Corporate Rights: A Tale of Two Reconstructions, 19th to 21st Century,” at Clayton State University, Feb. 21, 2013.

He presented “The Battle for the Future Has Begun: The Reassertion of Race, Space and Place in World-Systems Geographies and Anti-Systemic Cartographies” at the 2013 Annual Meeting of the Political Economy of the World-System Section of the American Sociological Association and the World Society Foundation Award of Excellence Program for Research Papers on World Society at University of California--Riverside on April 11-13, 2013.
