USD Presents Jan Goldsmith '76 (JD) the Author E. Hughes Career Achievement Award

San Diego (March 18, 2013) - On April 27, 2013, University of San Diego (USD) will present San Diego City Attorney Jan Goldsmith, ’76 (JD), with the Author E. Hughes Career Achievement Award. Goldsmith is one of nine distinguished alumni who will be honored by USD at the 2013 Alumni Honors Gala.

“Jan Goldsmith’s distinguished career is exemplary of a commitment to service that characterizes the very best of our graduates and members of the legal profession,” said USD School of Law Dean Stephen Ferruolo. “The law school is very proud of Goldsmith’s achievements and honored that the University is bestowing this award in recognition for all that he has done for the City of San Diego.”

Goldsmith graduated magna cum laude from the University of San Diego School of Law in 1976. He began his legal career with Seltzer, Caplan, Wilkins & McMahon and later established his own law firm specializing in business litigation. 

Goldsmith’s service to city government began when he served as the City of Poway’s deputy mayor from 1989-90, and then served on the city council beginning in 1990.  He also served as mayor of Poway. He was elected to the state assembly in 1992 and served three terms in the California State Assembly, representing the Northern San Diego City District.

Goldsmith was appointed as a San Diego Superior Court Judge in 1998.  He spent his first six years on the bench handling criminal and civil trials, and his final years assigned to an independent civil calendar. He was elected San Diego City Attorney in 2008 and re-elected in 2012. Goldsmith taught as an adjunct professor at USD School of Law in Fall 2007.
