Law School Selected to Participate in U.S. Education Services Trade Mission

San Diego (September 20, 2012) -  The University of San Diego (USD) School of Law was selected to participate in the largest U.S. education services trade mission in U.S. Department of Commerce history, promoting its LLM in Comparative Law program to law students and attorneys across Brazil.

USD School of Law was one of 66 U.S. colleges and universities— and one of only four law schools—selected to participate in the September 2012 trade mission. U.S. Under Secretary of Commerce for International Trade Francisco Sánchez accompanied the group of educators to Brasilia, São Paulo and Rio de Janeiro, where they met with more than 7,500 Brazilian students and parents at recruitment fairs in each city.

“These distinguished U.S. colleges and universities value the role that international students can play in helping shape the next generation of leaders in government, business and science,” Sánchez said at the EducationUSA Fair in Rio de Janeiro. “Our efforts during this mission strongly support the extraordinary commitment from President Obama and President Rousseff to increase student exchanges between our two countries.”

Education and training is one of the United States’ leading services exports. The industry annually adds $21 billion to the U.S. economy, and Brazilian students in the United States paid more than $257 million in tuition and fees for the 2010-2011 academic year. Brazil currently ranks 14th among countries sending students to the United States with more than 9,000 students, and the goal of this mission is to help boost that number significantly in the next five years.

“Law students from Brazil have attended our LLM programs for many years,” said Director of International and Comparative Law Programs Michael Ramsey. “Brazil’s economy is very strong right now, so we hope to take advantage of their desire for a U.S. legal education and attract even more Brazilian students to our LLM in Comparative Law program.”

“I spoke with dozens of law students and attorneys in each location who are interested in continuing their legal education in the United States,” said Director of Graduate Programs and Continuing Education Skip Horne. “Nearly every person I met already knew about our LLM programs and was excited about the possibility of studying law in San Diego.”
