Editor's note: The death penalty has long been a source of intense and passionate national debate. In California, voters this November have a chance to scrap it with a "yes" vote for Proposition 34. A local philosophy professor says it's time for a change.

It’s time to eliminate the death penalty in California. It is an unworkable and costly failure that fails to achieve justice. Proposition 34 offers a reasonable way to end the death penalty and replace it with life in prison without the possibility of parole, taking prisoners off death row and requiring them to work and provide restitution to the families of their victims.
