Nursing Schools Face Looming Faculty Shortage

U-T San Diego -- Fall classes have started at nursing schools around San Diego County, and deans at most of them say that if they aren’t feeling the nationwide faculty shortage today, they expect to experience that crunch in coming years.

“The average age of nursing faculty nationwide is about 57,” said Sally Brosz Hardin, dean of the University of San Diego’s Hahn School of Nursing and Health Sciences. “So, within the next decade, who is going to teach the next generation of nurses?”

That question seemed moot after the recession hit in 2008 and flatlined what had been a surging demand for nurses. (Full Story
