SF Gate — A.J. Griffin would seem to possess the mental bona fides. He majored in business administration at the University of San Diego and originally minored in Spanish.

"I switched over to French just to learn something new because I got bored with Spanish," Griffin said.

Griffin speaks Spanish with some of his teammates, and catcher Derek Norris said, "Every now and again, he'll let some French go."
