"Death Penalty's Leading Foe Gets Ovation"

San Diego Union-Tribune -- The man Sister Helen Prejean had known for two years would soon be dead, but he wasn’t ill. She was there with him, but he wasn’t in a hospital. He was going to be electrocuted at the Louisiana State Penitentiary.

It was April 5, 1984 and Prejean was the lone witness to the execution of convicted killer and rapist Elmo Patrick Sonnier. As she rode from the prison after Sonnier’s death, Prejean got sick and her sisters had to pull over. (Full Story
