USD Wine Classic: A Successful Tradition

Tuesday, August 5, 2014

The University of San Diego’s sixth annual Wine Classic, held on July 13 at the Joan B. Kroc Institute for Peace and Justice’s Garden of the Sea, was officially the event’s most successful to date.

The Wine Classic, which provided ticketholders access to tastings from 30 USD-connected wineries throughout California and beyond along with wonderful food, silent auction, an opportunity drawing and a beautiful setting with San Diego’s gorgeous summer weather, raised more than $67,000 in net proceeds for the Alumni Endowed Scholarship Fund.

The amount, which also factors in the second annual Vintners Dinner at USD’s La Gran Terraza on July 12, brings the overall total contribution to the USD student scholarship fund to nearly $300,000.

“The Wine Classic has truly become a signature event for USD and for the San Diego community. Everyone has a great time, enjoys the wine tasting and knows that their ticket purchase helps raise scholarship funds for our very deserving students at USD,” said Charles Bass, senior director of USD Alumni Relations.

Putting on this annual event involves a lot of planning, hard work and support from a variety of sources, including many USD alumni. The Wine Classic Committee was chaired by Paul Davis ‘86 and also featured Lisa Baldocchi ‘87, Kevin Dooley ’93, Christine Gabbara ‘02, Renee Herrell ‘06, Melissa Kerslake ‘80, Genevieve Knych-Rohan ‘86, Eric Ludwig ‘95, Heather Manly ‘02, ‘05, Christian Martin ‘15 and Pete Mousis.

Other key contributors included Alumni Relations staff members David Stephens, Erin B. Gunning ‘05 and Mary Cannon ‘12 and University Events and Promotions Staff Deanna Whitman, Erin Vanderveen, Whitney Matta and Nicole Zhe ‘09.

University Relations staff members Sarah Zakaria and John Phillips coordinated two additional events. Members of the Young Alumni Network were treated to a pre-event discussion on the California terroir, which was led by Jason Kimmel ‘04. Kevin Dooley ‘93, the Wine Classic’s founder and a Level 2 sommelier, gave a “how to” presentation on wine tasting to members of the Golden Toreros Society.

More than 40 recent young USD alumni were among the volunteer corps for event-day tasks at the Wine Classic.

Special thanks to the many generous sponsors of the USD Wine Classic, including Bartell Hotels, Torrey Pines Bank and McGuire Research Services, Inc.

The dates for the 2015 USD Wine Classic weekend are now available. The Vintners Dinner at La Gran Terraza will be held on Saturday, July 18. The seventh annual USD Wine Classic is Sunday, July 19. Tickets are expected to go on sale in April.
