Background:

For the past ten years, University Ministry and Community Service Learning have played a very important role in the Guadalajara Summer Program. By providing students with volunteer opportunities, the goals of University Ministry and the Program are:

  • To provide an opportunity for Guadalajara Summer Program participants to be introduced to the people in need and the social service providers (service partners) in Guadalajara. This would give students a glimpse of the socioeconomic issues facing Guadalajara and the network of Guadalajara service providers who are seeking long-term solutions.
  • To provide an opportunity for participants to reflect on the needs of our local and global communities and to consider life choices which will serve the greater good of these communities
  • To provide an opportunity for participants to experience a reciprocal giving, sharing and learning through service. In this way they may discover an essence of their humanity in common, not only with the upper middle class Mexicans of Guadalajara with whom they live, but also with the economically disadvantaged Mexicans.
  • To provide an opportunity for participants to consider their service experiences in light of their moral, ethical, religious and/or spiritual belief system.

Program Description:

For the time period June 6 through July 17, 2009, two USD students will be eligible for the internship, one for Community Service Learning and the other for the University Ministry. They will be selected based on grade point average, enthusiasm for community service learning or University Ministry activities and their letter of recommendation.

Depending on which internship the student applies for, interns will be responsible for organizing and coordinating University Ministry and Community Service events. These include, but are not limited to, arranging weekly visits to the local Casa Hogar Nacidos para Triunfar orphanage and cancer hospital, organizing fundraisers such as faculty vs. student sporting events, and setting up other service-learning projects.

Students participating in this internship will receive free tuition for 6 units of courses while in Guadalajara. Students will need to be available during the morning break from 10:40-11:30pm and during the afternoon break from 1:10-2:30 to meet with the University Ministry advisory, Dr. John Fendrick, coordinate sevice-leearning events, answer questions from students interested in participating in these activities and serve as the main contact person for the orphanage and hospital staff.
