Semester Exchange ProgramsUSD has agreements with many prestigious universities throughout the world. As a participant in an exchange program, a USD student would be one of only a few USD participants at that particular university and would, therefore, have the opportunity to fully immerse themself in the local culture and take courses alongside local students as well as other international students. Please visit our Exchange Partner Programs page to view our extensive network of global universities.
Affiliate Semester Programs
USD has affiliate partnerships in several countries around the world. USD students can fulfill major, minor, core, and other graduation requirements, are eligible to apply their USD financial aid towards tuition and program fees, can maintain their enrollment status at USD while abroad. The programs offer quality advising and support on-site and will allow you to study along side other USD students. There limited local students in affiliate programs. These programs, offered by partner study abroad organizations, universities, and other program providers, generally offer two models of international experiences:
- Direct Enroll - students enroll directly in the host university and are generally able to select from the entire university's course offerings. These courses will not be available in English, unless that is the local language.
- Island Programs - students enroll in courses with other international students and there are generally no local students in these courses.
USD Madrid ProgramThe University of San Diego Madrid Center, formally established in 2014, is USD's first, permanent international location. We celebrated the inauguration of the Center on November 17, 2014 with USD President, Dr. Mary Lyons, members of the USD Board of Trustees, Deans, alumni, faculty and staff, as well as several of our university partners and friends from the region. Our inauguration celebration coincided with the beginning of International Education Week (IEW) in the USA.
Dual Degree Programs
Through the USD School of Business' unique Dual Degree program, busienss majors have the opportunity to earn two business degrees – one from USD and the second degree from a partner university abroad.
Current partners are:
Dublin City University - Dublin, Ireland (courses abroad are taught in English)
EM Strasbourg Business School - Strasbourg, France (courses abroad are taught in English)
John Cabot University - Rome, Italy (courses abroad are taught in English)
Universidad Pontificia Comillas - Madrid, Spain (courses abroad are taught in Spanish)
Students pay USD tuition for their entire program – transferring credits to USD and the partner institution to earn the two degrees. Internships are required for the program in Spain and in Ireland, and are optional for the Italy program. Students spend two years at all partner institutions, except for EM Strasbourg Business School where students will spend only one year. Courses are in English, expect for the partnership in Madrid, where courses are taken in Spanish. Should students start the program abroad, and not complete their degree program, completed courses will transfer back to USD towards their USD degree.
