The University of San Diego and the TRIO Student Support Services put on a one-week early college orientation program for 80 incoming first-year USD students each year called Summer Bridge. Existing at USD since 2006, the program has been a great opportunity for students to get a feel for college through USD's academic rigor, activities designed to build community and friendships among new students and to answer questions and help individuals prepare for the start of a new education journey.

This year's program runs Aug. 8 through 14 and it is all being done virtually on Zoom from all over the United States.

Each day has a theme attached, ranging from representing your city or state, a favorite Disney character, favorite sports team, favorite superhero, to wearing a back-to-school outfit, having a throwback day and finishing with Torero Friday.

Summer Bridge showcases important campus resources — a virtual resource and engagement fair takes place on Aug. 11 — learning about Living-Learning Communities from faculty advisors, mentor/mentee meetings, information sessions such as navigating online learning and Zoom, personal financial literacy, Copley Library activities and individual and group-building events including appreciation and intentional activities, being fearless (University Ministry, Women’s Commons) sharing hopes and breaking boundaries.

Summer Bridge's exposure to USD’s academic rigor will come courtesy of a daily lecture and a class breakout session each weekday. The 2020 Summer Bridger faculty members are Odesma Dalrymple, PhD. (Industrial and Systems Engineering), Drew Talley, PhD, (Environmental and Ocean Sciences), Amanda Ruiz, PhD, (Mathematics), Alan Gin, PhD (Economics) and Evelyn Cruz, MFA (Department of Theatre).
