The popular Screenings series continues this spring with a single-channel work by Susan Hiller titled Lost and Found (2016). Hiller recorded the voices of 23 different indigenous people — in each case the best known speaker of an endangered or extinct language that she could find — and used an oscilloscope to translate their improvised speech into a vibrating green line. This video is part of the artist’s lifelong engagement with anthropological method, having studied linguistics at Hunter College in New York.
