Being or becoming a parent can dramatically change the schedule and responsibilities placed on you. Alternative class schedules or a leave of absence may be necessary in order for pregnant or parenting students to juggle family, and possibly work duties, while trying to complete their academic program. Being a pregnant or parenting student does not mean that you cannot finish your degree. USD offers many options to allow you to finish your coursework.

Part-Time Study
For some parents maintaining a full-time class schedule may be overwhelming, at least initially. Changing to a part-time class schedule may provide parenting students with the opportunity to continue working towards their academic goals while also taking time to focus on their family. It is important to note that changing from full-time status to part-time status may impact your financial aid award and health insurance eligibility. If you are an undergraduate student interested in switching to part-time studies, you are encouraged to talk with your academic advisor, financial aid, and your insurance company to see how part-time study may impact you academically as well as financially.
Leave of Absence
If you need to temporarily put your education on hold, you may request a leave of absence for a maximum of two consecutive semesters. The leave of absence must be requested by the last day to enroll in classes for that semester. To avoid tuition charges, the request must be filed before the last day of classes. Students must file the official Undergraduate Student Leave of Absence form with the Center for Student Success located in the Hahn University Center, Room 114.
More information about this process is available in the Academic Regulations.
