Volunteer Opportunities

The Office of Parent Relations advises a Parents Association Board. The board meets three times a year and exists to integrate parents into the university community by mobilizing them to volunteer their talents and abilities, to contribute financially, and to join other parents, students and university personnel in helping to create an educational environment consistent with the mission statement of USD.

Dear Fellow USD Parents,

As President of the Parents Association Board, I have the privilege to write this letter welcoming you and your student to the University of San Diego as you all become members of the Torero family.  Whether your son or daughter is transferring in or entering as a first-year student, this is a new beginning for them…and for you.

In our house, we are definitely a Torero family as both of our daughters decided to attend USD.  Our daughter Ashley graduated this past May from USD, and as they told us when we moved her in as a first-year, those four years went way too fast.  Our younger daughter Allison is entering her senior year at USD and we are looking forward to savoring each milestone this coming year.  I can’t stress enough my encouragement to each of you to enjoy these milestone moments together!  The drop-off…their first night in the residence hall with new roommates, making new friends with their classmates…your first call/face-time/text message to check-in, or their first classes, tests, grades, and more!  This is a time of sharing but letting them go…and…letting them grow.

One such milestone occurred the fall of their junior year for each of our daughters – the study abroad program.  It has been a favorite milestone for each of our girls. Ashley spent the semester in Florence, Italy studying Business.  Allison spent the semester in Rome, Italy studying International Business. Both of our girls enjoyed their time in Italy as well as on the weekends traveling with friends to other countries enjoying new cultures. I cannot emphasize enough how wonderful this opportunity was for both of our daughters.  They were able to live abroad and immerse themselves into each community as a student resident and further their education in another country.  They made life-long friends and memories to last a lifetime. If your child expresses an interest, encourage them to go!  If they don’t yet know, raise it as a possibility.  It is an amazing experience that they will appreciate and be grateful they did.

If I failed to mention the Parents Association, I would be missing another exciting opportunity to share in key events at USD.  The investments in both the students and the USD community that our Parent Board and Parent Ambassadors make annually are incredible.  All of these not only benefit our children but build a stronger USD brand for their life-long learning and connections after graduation.  Just as your child has the opportunity to choose how little or how much to get involved on campus, you also have a unique opportunity to be simultaneously involved at USD (without being intrusive to their student life)!

Whether you live near San Diego or reside elsewhere like many of our parent volunteers, I want to personally invite you to learn how we make an impact for USD and what fun we have doing so! Whether it is offering an internship opportunity to a USD student, sitting on a career panel, participating in a community service project, volunteering at an on-or off-campus event or supporting a scholarship, we hope you will dive in and be a participant and a contributor to this special community of Torero Parents.

Even if you are dedicated to your own alma mater, or perhaps are entrenched in your profession or business endeavors, I encourage you to adopt USD as “your family university.” Participate as a family. Participate as an individual.  The choice is yours. There are plenty of opportunities for you to become engaged in the environment where your sons and daughters are growing and focusing on what is next.  Why not be a part of that?  I would love to meet you during move-in weekend and talk with you about getting involved.

Parent Ambassadors

The Office of Parent Relations coordinates a national parent volunteer program. Parents may volunteer to serve as a USD Parent Ambassador to the university by assisting with Parent Relations, Admissions, and regional events. Parents and families of USD students serve as parent ambassadors (or volunteers) and have the opportunity to participate in the Parent Ambassador program. It’s a great opportunity to become involved with USD, meet other parents/families, further connect with your student’s college experience, and simply enjoy your status as a USD Torero parent. Learn more about volunteering as Parent Ambassadors. View the sign up to become a Parent Ambassador. Parents of alumni are welcome and encouraged to join.
