Dr. Mayo received her AS degree from De Anza College, BSN degree from California State University, Dominguez Hills, a Master and Doctoral Degree in Nursing Science from University of San Diego, and completed a Post Doctoral Fellowship in Nursing Gerontology at the University of California, San Francisco. She was inducted into the American Academy of Nursing in 2011.

Dr. Mayo has over 20 years of teaching experience. She is currently tenured and in a full professor position. Dr. Mayo also has extensive health care organizational experience as a clinical nurse specialist and as a nursing researcher. Areas of funded research include gerontological nursing, functional status of older persons with cognitive impairment, patient decision-making, and instrument psychometrics.

Dr. Mayo teaches in the PhD program. She is active locally and nationally in professional service and has received several awards for nursing research.
