―Sophie Hwang

Sophie Hwang is from Saint Cloud, Minnesota and side from majoring in Theatre, Hwang was involved with shark research and taught swim lessons. Drawn by a desire to experience life beyond the Midwest, Hwang chose the University of San Diego after an internship on campus solidified her decision to enroll. USD allowed her to take a long-standing love of theatre and study the craft in a collegiate setting. That decision led her into a department known for its camaraderie and dedication. “The theatre community at USD is a hard‑working, tight‑knit group,” Hwang said, reflecting on the collaborative environment that shaped her undergraduate experience.

Among the highlights of Hwang’s time in the program, certain faculty members stood out. “I absolutely loved and learned so much from the classes of Professors Elisa Benzoni, Jacob Bruce and Robin Roberts. I’m so grateful for the time I was able to spend in their classrooms.” A particular favorite course was Teaching Professor Elisa Benzoni’s Costume Practicum (THEA-316), where students learn hands-on technical skills in costume production and alteration.

For students considering getting involved in USD Theatre, Hwang offers simple but enthusiastic advice: “The department has so many opportunities for you to get involved. If you have an aspiration to do something theatre‑related, there is a definite place for you in the USD Department of Theatre.”

When asked what she was most proud of during her time at USD, Hwang stated that taking initiative beyond the classroom was the leading thing. She volunteered and sought employment in theatre education which was invaluable to her own studies. With a blend of academic dedication, artistic passion and a commitment to her community — both within and outside of USD — Hwang exemplifies the vibrant spirit of the department.

Hwang completed her studies a semester early, in December 2025, with post-graduate studies in her future. In Fall 2026, she will begin her master’s program in drama and theatre education at the University of Warwick in Coventry, England.
