It is the goal of the University of San Diego Student Health Center (SHC) to provide quality primary care to enrolled students. In large part this involves the diagnosis of, and the provision of medication for, medical conditions within the SHC’s scope of practice. This may include the SHC providing medications to students with chronic or previously diagnosed conditions. Typically, this involves a reassessment of the condition and contacting previous providers to obtain relevant medical information, and issuing new prescriptions. Please Contact Us to speak with medical staff to determine the best way we can assist you.
Prescription for Schedule II medications (i.e. narcotics, stimulants, and anxiolytic medications)
There are medical conditions in which medications used have a significant potential for misuse, abuse, or addiction. These medications are classified as Schedule II and include stimulants, anxiolytics, narcotics, and some other controlled substances. The SHC will consider assuming care or assisting in care involving stimulant medication for ADHD/ADD. The SHC does not take on management of other Schedule II medications as these typically correlate with conditions that should be managed by specialists.
Criteria for SHC to manage ADHD/ADD Schedule II medications:
- The medication requested must be appropriate to treat the student’s diagnosis
- The student must have a current provider and an active prescription for the medication
- The student should be stable on the current dose of the medication for 6 months or more
- The student should not be experiencing significant side effects of the medication that requires frequent monitoring.
- No other medical or psychiatric conditions complicate the management of this disorder, including substance use (marijuana or other recreational drug use).
If you would like the SHC to review your case for management and you fit the above criteria, please have your current prescriber fill out the Information Form for Prescription Management. You will also need to provide documentation that supports the diagnosis (neuropsychological testing, psychoeducational evaluation, documentation of impairment, and/or evaluations from multiple settings). You can attach the forms and documents to a message in your MyWellness portal for review. Once the SHC reviews the documents and you are approved for medical management, an appointment for a fee can be scheduled to initiate your care.
