Research

The Department of Environmental and Ocean Sciences puts a high priority on authentic research experiences for students as that prepares them for employment opportunities and graduate school.

Student Research

Coursework in the Environmental and Ocean Sciences major provides students with multiple opportunities to learn and develop research skills through hands-on experiences in the lab and by conducting fieldwork.

Environmental and Ocean Sciences majors also complete a capstone project as part of their required curriculum. Students may conduct research on-campus under the supervision of departmental faculty, or off-campus through experiential internships. Students compile and analyze a dataset to answer a proposed research question, culminating in an oral presentation of their results and discussion of the implications of their findings.

Courses

Students engaged in the capstone can get academic credit for their research or internships, or they may receive a stipend or scholarship support through a number of programs.

Faculty Research Projects

Faculty are always eager to have excited, engaged students join their labs. Current USD students are encouraged to reach out directly to faculty whose work is of interest to them or email EOS@sandiego.edu.

Research and Internship Funding Opportunities

Many student research projects and internships take place during the summer. Below are links to some of the funding options at USD — your faculty advisor or research mentor will be able to recommend which opportunities may be appropriate for you.

Showcasing Research

After completing a research project, talk to your faculty advisor, research mentor, or with the Office of Undergraduate Research about potential opportunities for presenting or publishing your results.

Creative Collaborations Undergraduate Research Conference

Creative Collaborations Undergraduate Research Conference (CC URC) showcases undergraduate research, scholarly activities and creative works from all disciplines conducted in partnership with faculty mentors. The high-quality work of our students reflects the intellectual curiosity of our undergraduate students, the outstanding abilities of the research mentors, as well as USD's commitment to academic excellence and experiential learning opportunities.

Many of the students who participate in Creative Collaborations also publish their work in academic journals and present their projects at regional, national and international conferences. Participating in research activities fosters critical thinking skills, prepares students for the 21st century workforce and helps them decide whether or not to include research in their academic and professional careers.

Digital USD

Students may have the opportunity to publish their work to Digital USD, a repository which publishes, preserves, and provides open online access to the scholarship, creative work, original data sets and archival material produced by or affiliated with the University of San Diego community.
