Meet Our Swim Instructors!
Our Lifeguard & Swim Instructors are an essential key to helping your swimmers ensure they are safe while in or around the water. Our instructors are beyond excited to swim with your swimmers and help them learn and practice water safety and swimming.
Programs & Information

Our youth summer Swim Lesson program runs for 8 weeks from June – August. Certified American Red Cross instructors with swimming and teaching experience lead our swim lessons. At USD, we maintain small class sizes to maximize the attention each student will receive. This summer, we are offering small group, private and semi-private lessons for children 3 and older.
Please carefully review class requirements and descriptions for private and semi-private classes prior to registering.
Children must be at least 3 years old to join the group lesson swim program and at least 2.5 years old to join our private/semi-private classes.
Program Overview
- Two-Week Lessons (8 total lesson days):
- Private/Semi-private lessons are Monday - Thursday for two weeks and for 30-minutes per lesson.
- *Semi-private lessons are designed for children who are at or about the same swim level. It is not based on age. We do not mix and match kids. To be eligible to register for a semi-private option, you must register 2 children who are approximately the same skill level.
- Group Lessons are Monday - Thursday for two weeks and for 30-minutes per lesson.
- We follow the American Red Cross Learn to Swim (LTS) program that includes group lessons in Pre K1, Pre K2, and Learn To Swim 1 (LTS1) through Learn to Swim 6 (LTS6). Class capacity is dependent on the level.
- Private/Semi-private lessons are Monday - Thursday for two weeks and for 30-minutes per lesson.
- Single-Day Lesson:
- We also offer pay-per-lesson 45-minute private/semi-private single classes on varied Fridays, Saturdays or Sundays at 12:15pm, 1:15pm, 2:15pm and/or 3:15pm throughout the entire summer season. We recommend the single session longer duration 45-min lesson for children who are at least 5 years old.

Learn to Swim Fees
*All swim registrations include free pool access for the child and up to 3 other family/friend members during the duration of their lesson/session date(s) during posted open informal pool hours. For example, if your child is registered in a 2-week lesson from June 15 - 25, then your child and 3 other individuals can use the USD pool during that time frame at no additional charge. If your child is in a single day lesson on Saturday 6/20, then your child and up to 3 individuals can use the USD pool during posted open hours all day on the 20th at no additional charge.
- Group Lessons (PK 1-2 & LTS 1-6):
- $150 per child
- Private Classes (one child to one instructor):
- Two-Week Session: $240 per child
- Single Day 45-min session: $45 per child per registered date
- Semi-Private Classes (two children with one instructor):
- Two-Week Session: $290 ($145 per child, 2 children max)
- Single Day 45-min session: $65 ($32.50 per child, 2 children max)
- As noted above in the "overview" section, semi-private lessons are designed for children who are at or about the same swim level (it is based on level and not on age). We do not mix and match kids. To be eligible to register for a semi-private option, you must register 2 children who are about the same skill level.
Swim Policies
- A parent/guardian must accompany and supervise the child during the swim lesson and while the child is in the facility. **You may not drop off your child**
- Parents/guardians are not permitted to be in the pool lesson area during the lesson. Parents/guardians may watch from the side of the pool deck or from the designated pool lounge space.

The clinic will also include proper stretching and warm up, a full-body exercise series for young swimmers, and fun competitive drills. Please see the program information below. This clinic will be offered only one weekend this summer.

- 10:30am - 10:45am: Stretch/Warm-up
- 10:45am - 11:30am: Stroke Clinic & Refinement Drills
- 11:30am - 11:40am: Break
- 11:40am - 12:15pm: Competitive Drills
- 12:15pm - 12:30pm: Games/Cool Down/Stretch/Review
- Pick up at 12:30pm
- Saturday & Sunday 10:30am-12:30pm

Participants will learn the ins and outs of the sport in a safe, fun and engaging way. Our experienced coaches will review the sport, go through drills and work on swimming techniques to support strong swimmers. Please see the program information below.

Participants will learn the ins and outs of the sport in a safe, fun and engaging way. Our experienced coach will review the sport, go through drills and work on diving techniques that support fun and safety. Please see the program information below.

Take your child's birthday party or special celebration pool-side at our beautiful outdoor pool. Pay per hour (2 hour minimum) for access to a lifeguarded and staffed pool. All parties include guaranteed access to the scalloped shallow end zone, pool toys, pool deck games such as giant Jenga & Connect-4, an in-pool platform for the little ones, 2 patio tables with umbrellas, up to 10 lounge chairs, access to space in our refrigerator, access to our BlueTooth stereo, and use of our propane BBQ. Bring in your own food and non-alcoholic beverages (no glass allowed) have a summer fun-filled party!
Notes:
- Pool parties are not completely private. All guests will be sharing the overall space with other visitors. Your reservation will guarantee you exclusive access to up to 2 tables with umbrellas, up to 10 lounge chairs, and majority use of the scalloped shallow end zone.
- Our outdoor pool is heated to 79 degrees and is chlorinated.
- For safety and liability reasons, pool access will not include diving board privileges.
- Please know that our adult supervisor to child ratio is 5:1 (you must have one adult for every 5 minors; a minor is defined as any person under 18 years old).

Schedule:
- Pool parties are only available between 10 AM - 6 PM Fridays, Saturday and Sundays from 6/15 - 8/16, 2026. You can reserve our pool for 2 hours up to 5 hours. We do not rent for half hour blocks.
- Advanced reservations are required prior to registering and paying.
Process to Reserve:
- Pick a time frame between 10 AM and 6 PM
- Email campusrecreation@sandiego.edu to check availability and to secure your date. Once the date is confirmed, a staff member will contact you to collect payment.
- We will hold your reservation for 48 hours. If we do not receive your completed registration and/or payment within 48-hours of making your reservation, we will cancel your reservation and release your date to other potential registrants.
- Should Campus Recreation have to cancel your Pool Party (e.g. staffing issues or if we close the pool for any safety reason), we will issue you a full refund. Partial refunds may be applied to events that are canceled within 24-hours. No refund will be provided for those who cancel day of.
Release of Liability Waiver
- Each participant/user must sign a Release of Liability Waiver on the registration site (or in person) prior to participating in any Recreation program or using the facility. All minors must have a parent/guardian signature on the waiver.
Cancellation Policy
- After we receive a confirmed payment, a cancellation fee of 50% of your program cost will be charged if you must cancel your program. We will not issue a refund (even pro-rated amount) if you cancel within 24-hours of your program start date or on or after your program start date.
- Please know that the department reserves the right to cancel low enrollment classes/programs. In the event that the Department elects to cancels a class or program for any reason, you will be given a notice and issued a full refund.
- If you cannot make a class due to illness or a personal situation, please note that the Department cannot offer a make up class option, add in additional classes or extend your class program. We will not issue a pro rated refund if you cannot make a class due to a personal situation.
Rescheduling Policy and Rain/Weather Issues
Rescheduling
- If you need to move to a different level class or session date before your program begins, then we will do our best to accommodate change of class/program requests. However, the department cannot guarantee the availability of class times as many of our classes fill up early. If after the first class you feel that your child is in the wrong class/program, we will do our best to place that child in the correct class/program, depending on space capacities.
Safety Closures
- We are required to close the pool and certain facility areas in the event of inclement weather (lightening and hard rain storms) or due to safety issues with the facility, staff, and patrons.
- If your program or class is canceled due to weather or safety concerns, Campus Recreation will offer a make-up day to all affected participants at the Department's discretion. If you cannot attend the make-up day, no refunds of any kind will be issued.
Parking on Campus
- All guests parking on University property Monday - Friday between 7am - 7pm must have an electronic parking permit if parking in a white-lined or yellow-lined space.
- Permits are $3 per hour and required Monday - Friday between 7am - 7pm.
- Parking is free in any USD space (other than the outlined "reserved 24/7 spaces") Mon - Fri after 7pm and free all day Saturday and Sunday.
- Free parking is available 24/7 on the street adjacent to Linda Vista road on Via Las Cumbres (~5-min walk)
- Metered spaces at the Sports Center Pool: All green-lined spaces operate as pay-by-plate. Once you have made your payment, there is no need to display your receipt on your dashboard.
- Payment at all metered space locations may also be made from your smart phone. Simply download the ParkMobile App on the Apple Store or Google Play Store.
Credit Card
To register online with credit card, please first ensure you have a Recreation User Account and then Register online with credit card for the desired program. Steps:
- If you do not already have one, please first create new Recreation user account (note that if you have an active USDOne MySanDiego account, then you already have an active Recreation user account): https://campusrecreation.sandiego.edu/Account/Register
- Once your account has been activated, please register for your desired class or program on our Summer Registration site
If you prefer to register over the phone with credit card, please call Campus Recreation at 619-260-4583. Please be prepared to spend 5 to 10 minutes on the phone as the supervisor will first need to set up your user account before they can register you for your desired classes.
Cash/Check
If you wish to pay with cash or check, you must do so in person at the Campus Recreation main office (located at the Sports Center: 5998 Alcala Park, San Diego CA 92110).
The Recreation office is open Monday - Sunday between 10:00 AM - 6:00 PM. *Please remember to pay the parking meter in front of the facility to park before entering the office area.
