Toreros Taking Action
USD Sport Clubs provide opportunities for students to experience the commitment, challenge and enjoyment of a competitive or recreational sports experience. These teams are initiated by students and are reflective of their diverse sporting and activity interests. We serve over 500 students in 22+ clubs each semester. Each of our Sport Clubs differ in size, season, and playing ability, with some clubs that compete at a high level and others that play for recreation and fun. Like all student organizations at USD, the Sport Club program also offers opportunities for development of life-skills such as leadership, cooperation, scheduling, budgeting, organizational dynamics, sportsmanship, and teamwork.
The USD Sport Clubs program operates within the jurisdiction of the national or regional associations that have been established for each individual sport as well as policies and procedures established by the department and University. Teams are only partially funded by Associated Students, and their success relies heavily on their own resources, fundraising and donations.
For more information or questions please contact our Competitive Sports department at (619) 260-4275, sportclubs@sandiego.edu.
Are you ready to take action?
Match point, not grade point. Teamwork, not homework. Playbooks, not textbooks.
Each Sport Club member is required to register with Campus Recreation for their desired club and pay membership dues each semester. Certain clubs are also offered as elective 0.5 unit credit classes. If the member wishes to sign up for their club as a credit option, they may do so using their MySanDiego Portal or by completing an add/drop form. Each club member is also required to submit an annual Medical Paperwork packet. New members must complete a one-time sports physical prior to participating in their club; returning players will not normally need another physical. Additionally, every member in the Sport Clubs program has access to an on-campus Athletic Trainer for referrals, injury assessment and some physical therapy.
Sport Clubs are managed by three or more designated student leaders. Leaders hold positions such as General Manager, Assistant General Manager, Finance Manager, Travel Manager, Risk Manager and Membership Coordinator. Some teams elect to have additional leadership positions such as Social Media Manager, Fundraising Chair or Marketing Manager. Campus Recreation requires each club to have at minimum three designated leaders each semester. Leaders receive extensive training by Campus Recreation staff so they can efficiently and effectively manage and operate their club while developing their leadership skills.
The Sports Club Leadership team serves the USD community and fellow sport club members by participating in a leadership training program where they learn, review and develop an understanding of the following:
- Student and Campus Recreation policies
- Leadership Position descriptions and duties
- Basic expectations of the club team and Campus Recreation
- Institutional and departmental documentation
- Risk management and emergency action plans for all club events
- Club sports budget and procedures
- Travel policies and procedures
- Scheduling operations
- Leadership Development Skills to enhance personal and team development (i.e. Bystander intervention Training, Language Matters Training, Safe Space Ally Training, Career Development Workshops, etc.)
Club Leaders can earn 0.5 course elective credit in the Recreation Leadership Development Class (EDRC 167-01) each semester that they are an active leader ($0 registration fee). Requirements to earn a passing grade apply.
All of our Sport Clubs are Student Organizations sponsored by Associated Student Government (ASG), and advised by Campus Recreation. Clubs elect their own student leaders to organize and administer their club while being logistically and developmentally supported by both Campus Recreation and ASG.
Every contribution to USD Club Sports is viewed as important. Whether it is great or small, donations like yours help build our Torero Sport Club future.
