Increased globalization and the internet have brought instances of human trafficking and child exploitation to unprecedented levels. As a result, the criminal justice system stands at a historic crossroad. We will review and discuss the various Title 18 crimes associated with human trafficking and child exploitation, accompanied by the relevant case law. We will also review the various methods of proof used by prosecutors to combat these crimes. This course will involve a written exam at the end of the semester designed to evaluate the student's understanding of the law and the challenges that are encountered during the investigation and prosecution of a human trafficking case.
USD Law students work with CAI professional staff on state and federal legislative or regulatory advocacy, impact litigation, research or public education projects. CAI is always working on CSEC related issues and the Policy Clinic provides an opportunity for interested law students to work on projects related to this topic.
Human Trafficking Basics
This presentation will go over the federal definition of human trafficking and desciptions of sex and labor trafficking. The presentation will also teach participants how to identify and understand victims and about the anti-trafficking response network in the U.S.
It is important to know the federal definition of human trafficking and how this definition impacts the way we address human trafficking today. The federal definition forms the foundation for the various topics in this module, including common misconceptions about what trafficking is and is not, how to properly identify indicators of human trafficking in both victims and perpetrators, and the risk factors associated with vulnerability to human trafficking.
After completing this training, participants will understand what fuels the human trafficking industry which has become the fastest-growing criminal enterprise in the world and will be able to recognize the tactics that traffickers use to lure their victims with prevention as the ultimate goal.
This presentation will provide a brief overview of child sex trafficking, including risk factors, network characteristics, trafficking indicators, models for institutional response, and promising practices for serving youth.
This free online training will address intimate partner sex trafficking, particularly how pimps select their victims. The focus will be on predator behavior, not victim risk factors.
This free online training will educate participants on how to investigate bias, stigmas, and risk factors that may lead to victimization of individuals with disabilities; examine perspectives from researchers, service providers, and leaders to understand contributing factors to susceptibility to trafficking and discuss prevention from each of these lenses; and identify promising practices and service responses that address underlying issues that can put individuals with disabilities at risk

Trauma-Informed Learning
This free online training will educate participants on the impact of trauma on the brain and provide tools and tips on how to effectively work with clients who are victims of trauma without re-traumatizing them. This training is open to everyone but is tailored to attorneys and social service providers working with trauma victims and survivors. We suggest this training for our pro bono attorney and volunteer network and others working in the anti-trafficking field.

Workshops
The HT Innovation Workshop is a full immersion, one or two-day experience in which participants (a) learn in-depth about sex trafficking in the San Diego-Tijuana border region, (b) map complementarities and gaps in the current service and policy landscape, and (c) use this landscape/gap analysis to articulate tangible, impactful, and innovative initiatives that leverage and combine resources to stop and prevent sex trafficking.
In partnership with the San Diego Trafficking Prevention Collaborative, Dr. Carpenter has headed an action research project that captures learnings from into an evolving Playbook that identifies best practices for collective impact initiatives. The Playbook is meant to act as both an instructional guide and a resource manual to a holistic trafficking prevention initiative that is both replicable and scalable. It identities best practices for Collective partnership formation, governance, structure, performance, and impact.
