The University of San Diego Welcomes a New Wave of Toreros for the Fall Semester

The University of San Diego (USD) is set to welcome students to campus for the start of the 2025-2026 academic year, with approximately 1,300 first-year students joining the university community.

This weekend, campus residence halls will fill with life as an estimated 2,600 students move into campus dorms.

This incoming first-year class stands out as one of the most accomplished and well-rounded in USD’s history. Some highlights include:

  • The average GPA is a 4.02
  • 54% of the class identifies as a student of color, with 34% identifying as Hispanic
  • 25% are the first in their family to attend college
  • 34% are fluent in a language other than English
  • 45% identify as Catholic, and there are 16 different faith traditions represented
  • The first-year class comes from 40 states, 23 countries and 3 U.S. territories

“There’s nothing quite like the energy of a new academic year,” said USD President James T. Harris III, DEd. “We’re thrilled to welcome such a bright, passionate and dynamic group of students to our campus. Each new class brings fresh perspectives and ideas that strengthen our community and move us closer to fulfilling our mission of creating a more inclusive, sustainable and hopeful world.”

That commitment to sustainability is reflected in a new student-led initiative debuting this fall. Torero Thrift is a program developed by USD students after conducting research into campus waste and donation needs. The initiative allowed students to donate or recycle items from their dorm rooms, including lamps, mini-fridges, clothing, and school supplies, during the spring move-out period. Those items were placed into storage and will be made available at no cost to students during move-in weekend. It is a valuable opportunity for students to furnish their rooms sustainably and affordably while supporting USD’s commitment to zero waste.

Undergraduate and graduate classes begin on Wednesday, September 3. The School of Law began classes on Monday, August 18.
