Psychological Sciences Department Celebrates Distinguished Graduates
The Department of Psychological Sciences at the University of San Diego has named Aishia Al-Amin, Grace Marek and Gabriella Thomas as recipients of the 2025 Distinguished Graduate Award. This prestigious honor is awarded annually to graduating seniors who have demonstrated academic excellence, leadership and a strong commitment to research throughout their undergraduate careers. These students have contributed meaningfully to the department through roles such as teaching assistants, tutors and officers in student organizations including the Psychology Club and Psi Chi. Their dedication has left a lasting impact on both their peers and the broader academic community.
Aisha Al-Amin, a psychology major with minors in business administration and communication, has been a dynamic presence in the department. “Being a member of the honors program and conducting my own independent research thesis or being president of the Psychology Club taught me how to lead with a purpose and create meaningful opportunities for others,” she said. One of her favorite memories was studying abroad in London with Associate Professor of Psychological Sciences Michael Ichiyama, PhD. “It was such an impactful experience... I learned a little more about the world and myself.” Al-Amin will be pursuing a master’s of science in industrial organizational psychology at San Diego State University. She expressed deep gratitude to her mentors, saying, “It takes a community! Dr. Nadav Goldschmied, Dr. Steven Berkley and Dr. Anne Koenig have all played a huge role in my journey.”
Grace Marek, a psychology major with a minor in sociology, has been actively involved in research and teaching throughout her time at USD. “My time at USD has helped me grow both academically and personally,” she said. Marek’s most impactful experience was working on child development research with Dr. Molitor. “It deepened my understanding of psychological research and inspired me to pursue a career in developmental psychology.” She plans to gain practical experience working with children before applying to PhD programs. Marek also emphasized the importance of mentorship, advising future students to “take advantage of the small class sizes and get to know your professors. Relationships with professors can provide students with valuable opportunities and meaningful mentorship.”
Gabriella Thomas, also recognized for her outstanding academic and research contributions, joins Al-Amin and Marek as a model of excellence within the department. Together, these graduates exemplify the values of intellectual curiosity, leadership and service that define the Department of Psychological Sciences. As they prepare to take their next steps, the department celebrates their achievements and the example they set for future students.
