Celebrating Diversity and Inclusion: Greg Prieto, PhD, and Gaby Ortiz Flores, MA, Recognized for Their Impact at USD
Last week, the University of San Diego (USD) hosted its 4th annual Diversity and Inclusion Impact Awards, now named the Sister Sally M. Furay Awards, at the Hahn University Center. This event was sponsored by the Center for Inclusion and Diversity, celebrating faculty and staff who have demonstrated a commitment to fostering diversity, equity, inclusion and social justice within the USD community.
The College of Arts and Sciences is proud to recognize two of its outstanding team members, Professor of Sociology Greg Prieto, PhD, and Digital Content Manager Gaby Ortiz Flores, MA, who received Diversity and Inclusion Impact Awards for their meaningful contributions to creating a more inclusive campus environment.
Their devotion to driving structural change is evident in their development of innovative programs and initiatives that address systemic barriers and create opportunities for underrepresented groups. By making substantial contributions to USD’s diversity and inclusion goals, they actively promote a campus climate that values and celebrates diversity, ensuring that all members of the university, including students, faculty, staff and alumni feel seen, heard and supported.

Biographies
Gaby Ortiz Flores, MA
Gabriela Ortiz Flores serves as the digital content manager in the College of Arts and Sciences. In her current position, she develops digital content and coordinates web strategy for the college's 20 academic departments, as well as its centers and programs.
Prior to joining the University of San Diego community, Ortiz Flores spent 15 years working in student affairs at various institutions, primarily designing and leading DEI, civic engagement, and leadership development programs and events. Until she started working in higher education, her work focused on advancing social justice and equity through theater, arts education, and youth leadership development.
Ortiz Flores was born in Mexico and grew up on the south side of Chicago. She graduated from the University of Chicago with a bachelor’s degree in English Language and Literature; and completed her master’s degree in Digital Media and Storytelling from Loyola University Chicago.
Greg Prieto, PhD
Dr. Greg Prieto is a professor of sociology in the College of Arts and Sciences. As a sociologist, Prieto studies the way law and legal institutions reproduce or reduce inequality in the cases of (undocumented) immigrants, police, and queer youth.
Working with a team of researchers at the Stanford Walkout Lab for Youth Justice, Greg’s current research examines the way that police, courts, and community service providers channel queer youth of color into and out of the juvenile justice system.
On campus, Greg’s service has focused on supporting queer and undocumented students in programs like the student drag show and our campus-wide Undocumented Student Support Network. In the wake of a recent cancer diagnosis and medical leave, Greg writes about their experience navigating chronic illness, death and dying. Greg looks forward to returning to campus to offer a course on the topic.
