From Awareness to Action: Supporting Justice-Impacted Students Through Inclusive Teaching Practices

Join this two-part faculty development series, happening on Friday, September 11th and Friday, September 18th, hosted by the Torero Urban Scholars and the Center for Educational Excellence to deepen your understanding of justice-impacted students and equip you with practical, evidence-informed strategies for creating learning environments where these students, and ultimately all students, can thrive. Rather than focusing solely on awareness, this series invites faculty to move from understanding to action by exploring how classroom practices, institutional culture, and authentic relationships foster belonging, persistence, and long-term student success. Grounded in the lived experiences of justice-impacted students, current research, and the work of the Torero Urban Scholars program, participants will leave with a deeper understanding of the barriers and strengths justice-impacted students bring to higher education, as well as concrete tools they can immediately apply in their own teaching.

Please note that the curriculum for Part 2 relies on concepts established in Part 1. We recommend attending both sessions for a comprehensive experience.

Workshop Learning Outcomes:

By the conclusion of this two-part institute, participants will be able to:

1. Understand: Describe the historical, structural, and educational contexts that shape the experiences of justice-impacted students in higher education.

2. Reflect: Critically examine their own assumptions, biases, classroom practices, and institutional norms that may unintentionally create barriers to student belonging and success.

3. Apply: Implement evidence-informed, trauma-responsive, strengths-based teaching strategies that promote learning, trust, and academic success for justice-impacted students.

4. Connect: Recognize campus and community resources, including Torero Urban Scholars, and understand when and how to connect students with appropriate support.

5. Transform: Develop an individualized action plan for creating more equitable, relationship-centered, and inclusive learning environments within their own courses and departments.
