Ellen P. Aprill
About the Speaker
Ellen P. Aprill is senior scholar in residence at UCLA Law School’s Lowell Milken Center For Philanthropy And Nonprofit Law. She recently retired from LMU Loyola Law School where she is the John E. Anderson Professor of Tax Law Emerita. She received her education at University of Michigan, UCLA, and Georgetown University Law Center, where she served as an editor for the Georgetown Law Review. After law school, she clerked for the Honorable John D. Butzner of the United States Court of Appeals for the Fourth Circuit and for the Honorable Byron R. White, associate justice of the United States Supreme Court. Aprill is a fellow of the American College of Tax Counsel and received the 2023 Vanguard Award for Outstanding Lifetime Achievement in Nonprofit Law from the ABA Business Section Exempt Organization's Committee.
The Richard Crawford Pugh Lecture
The Richard Crawford Pugh Lecture on Tax Law & Policy brings a distinguished practitioner, judge or government official who has played a significant role in shaping U.S. and international tax policy to the law school each year to discuss current and developing tax law and policy trends.
The endowed lecture was established in 2009 in honor of the long and illustrious career of USD's Professor of Law Emeritus Richard Crawford Pugh. Before coming to USD, Pugh was a professor at Columbia Law School, a deputy assistant U.S. attorney general (Tax Division), and a partner at the international law firm of Cleary, Gottlieb, Steen & Hamilton.
