Mariachi Ensemble

Learn and perform in the Mexican tradition of mariachi

The Mariachi Ensemble, initiated in the fall of 2012, introduces students to a wide and rich variety of mariachi ensemble repertoire, consisting of traditional and original compositions.

Join a vibrant collective of students and community members who are coached and expected to develop musical, technical and ensemble-playing skills.

The instruments include violin, trumpet, guitar, vihuela and guitarrón; other instruments may be included, depending upon the experience of students. Selected instruments are provided.

Singers are welcome, as are instruments beyond those traditionally included in mariachi.

USD students may enroll in the Mariachi Ensemble for one unit each semester, without limit. Three credits will fulfill the fine arts core curriculum requirement.

Performances

The Department of Music hosts the annual Mariachi Conference, giving hundreds of students from far and wide the opportunity to be immersed in music and culture. Students learn mariachi history, repertory, instrument technique and musical style, and have the opportunity to interact with professional and influential musicians. This conference also features three public performances, all taking place in Shiley Theatre.

Pre-College Program

High school students can earn college credit, completely free of charge, by joining the Mariachi Ensemble and any ensembles conducted by the Department of Music. Please email music@sandiego.edu for details.
