Judo, also known as “Kano Jiu-jitsu,” is a Japanese grappling martial art founded in 1882 by Jigoro Kano. It was derived from three schools of "jujitsu" (or jiu-jitsu) a viciously malicious samurai martial art applied on the battlefield in feudal Japan. Kano refined the techniques through the lens of efficiency and mutual benefit and welfare for application in sports and self-defense, which was later refined further to formulate the basis of other grappling arts like modern day Brazilian "Jiu-jitsu" (BJJ) and Sambo. Judo is the first martial art to be introduced into the Olympic games and is one of the most popular sports in the world. Judo translates (roughly) to “gentle way,” (and jiu-jitsu, roughly to the "gentle art") as foundations are predicated on the principles of using the opponent’s momentum and leverage through position (rather than one's own strength) to execute techniques with maximal efficiency and minimal effort- an extremely effective form of self-defense, enabling a smaller person with better technique to dominate a larger opponent. By the end of the course, you will have been introduced to a variety of throws (takedowns), control positions, and submissions (joint locks, chokes, etc.) for applications in the sports of Judo, modern Brazilian Jiu-jitsu, Sambo, and for self-defense. There will be (optional) opportunities for live sparring (rolling). Judogi (or BJJ Gi) with pants, jacket, & belt, recommended.
