Catholic Social Thought Committee Meeting Summary

Date, Time and Location:
Wednesday, March 22, 2006, 2:30-3:30, UC-103

Attendees:
Stephen Conroy, Sr. Gina Rodee (leads); Maria Pilar Aquino, Larry Gardepie, Kenneth Gonzalez, Lupita Jewell, Sharon McGuire, Linda Peterson, Gina Roaldi, Nina Sciuto, Greg Zackowski, Diane Callahan
Agenda or Key Discussion Items:
  1. Approval of minutes
  2. Subcommittee reports
  3. Web page update

Action Items:
  1. Announcements: Steve announced that Cheryl has resigned her subcommittee co-chair role and position on the CST committee due to senior thesis and other obligations. There was a motion of support and thank you for her work on CST.
  2. Minutes (from March 1st meeting) approved.
  3. Subcommittee Reports:
    • Off-Campus Survey: Greg reported that the off-campus survey is considered closed and that he will be working on summarizing the data into a report. Steve offered to help. Greg suggested that after the report has been approved by the CST Committee the report (pdf version) should be placed on the new CST website and a thank you e-mail sent to the survey respondents with a link to the website. It was suggested that the survey data also be available. A question was raised on what is needed in the report. Steve responded that he expected the report to analyze what the data means, and that the report contain text and tables.
      Action Items:
      • Analyze data and draft report (Greg, Steve).
      • Approved report placed on the CST website (Diane).
      • Thank you e-mail sent to the survey respondents with link to website (Greg).
    • On-Campus Inventory: Nina, Lupita and Larry reported that Nina and Lupita will take the lead in reviewing the on-campus inventory data; Lupita will create pivot tables or tables with filters so people can review specific subsets of data. It was suggested that future surveys of this kind be sent to the faculty, as many faculty who may include CST themes in the classroom did not have the chance to respond to the survey.
      Action Items:
      • Create pivot/filter tables (Lupita).
      • Analyze data and report back to CST Committee (Lupita, Nina).
    • Campus Conversations: Sr. Gina reported that the subcommittee would like to launch the CST dialogue the 3rd week of September (2006) with a noon-time lecture for on-campus constituent groups and an evening lecture that would be open to on- and off-campus groups. A number of potential speakers have been identified (e.g., John Coleman, John Masaro, Tom Shannon), but it was suggested that time is running short to contact these speakers for a September engagement. It was suggested that Dean Nick Healey could be a speaker for spring 2007. Different formats were suggested: lectures; panel of speakers (every other month — with a different focus each date); FYE and Residence Life orientation sessions; "conversation table" (people seated around a table, listening in on a conversation between faculty). Other suggestions focused on providing or linking service learning projects to topics and lectures: having a list of projects available on the CST website that would support the lectures/panels; encouraging faculty, students and staff in the orientations to be engaged in projects. The topics of budget (to be able to plan, contact and schedule speakers and marketing) and how to institutionalize the work of the CST Committee were raised. It was decided that the CST Committee needs to stay in place since it has a broad representation of campus constituents. In addition, the following suggestions were made: each division and school/college has a CST committee to bring the CST work into the various units; CST should be seen as interdisciplinary (through lectures, projects, etc.); may need to develop a CST newsletter that showcases events, what is happening on campus, and projects; need to develop a relationship with departments as the campus dialogues about and explores CST themes and implications.
      Action Items:
      • Subcommittee will finalize proposal, and have it ready for the April 5th CST meeting.
      • Include CST Committee continuing role in the 2006-07 work plan.
  4. Web Page Update: Diane showed the recent changes to the CST website (About USD / Catholic Identity / Catholic Social Thought). The following suggestions were made:
    • Include a picture of the CST Committee;
    • Add a link from the CST website to the Strategic Directions website that lists CST committee members, committee work, etc. (shows the legitimacy and make-up of the committee);
    • Bibliography:
      • The life of a bibliography is usually 2 years: it was suggested that the bibliography be shortened to a "recommended reading" list that is updated periodically (shorter version is easier to keep updated);
      • Arrange bibliography into categories — 1 to 2 books in each category (e.g., CST in the classroom; CST basic ideas; USD faculty published).
    • Action Items:
      • Add link from CST website to SDI CST website (Diane).
      • Arrange bibliography into categories (Ken).
      • Shorten bibliography into a "recommended reading" list (Sr. Gina, Fr. Norbert Rigali)
  5. Miscellaneous Items:
    • Faculty Curriculum Development Panel (FCDP) is sponsoring a second CST panel presentation on Thursday, March 23, 12:30-2:00 entitled "Catholic Social Thought - A Sequel." Pilar, Steve and Matt Zwolinski will be the speakers.
    • Linda mentioned that she will be on sabbatical fall 2006; Pilar will be on a full academic year sabbatical (fall 2006 and spring 2007). It was suggested that the CST Committee may need to discuss rotating members as other obligations occur.
    • It was suggested that Steve Pultz be invited to a future CST Committee meeting to talk about the CST directions so that Admissions can showcase CST within the Catholic identity discussions of recruiting trips.

Next Meeting:
Wednesday, April 5, 2:30-3:30 (UC-103)
Potential agenda items:
  • 2006-07 work plan
  • Campus Conversations proposal
  • Subcommittee reports on on-campus inventory and off-campus survey
