What do you hope to do with your degree and credential, and why?
I would like to become a school counselor in a Juvenile Court School at the middle or high school level. I feel that there is a gap that needs to be bridged between mental health, education, and the court system and that a school counselor is in a vital position to do so.
Any outside obligations (family, military, volunteer work, student organizations, etc)?
I have been fortunate to have the full support of my loved ones home in Wisconsin. Since moving to California I have volunteered with Momentum Learning, with SGSA in Tijuana, and been inducted into Chi Sigma Iota. I also hold a part-time job which provides a variety of additional community engagement opportunities.
Tell us about any internships, graduate assistantships, student teaching, practicum or fieldwork you have done through SOLES. Where did you work, what did you do, and how did it impact you?
I am currently fulfilling my practicum experience at PRIDE Academy in the Santee School District. I am working with students K-8 in areas ranging from developing social skills to setting academic goals in an effort to build school connectivity. I have learned a great deal about myself and the difference between what I thought I wanted to do and what I might actually be well suited for. I have always had a passion for the Juvenile Court System and working at a high school level; however, working with younger students has provided an opportunity to develop my voice as a counselor and hone skills that I didn’t know that I had.
Have you completed an international experience? What did you do?
I will be completing my international experience in Japan. We will be studying human development in both Tokyo and Toyama. More details to come!
