R. Michael Berrill reports that he is “still parenting, teaching, surfing” at San Diego’s Ocean Beach.

Father Joseph Carroll (M.A.) continues to operate Father Joe’s Villages, a network of charities that most recently added Nightingale Manor, an emergency shelter in Palm Springs, Calif.

UNDERGRADUATE ALUMNI
Pauline Carbone (M.Ed. ’87) has been teaching at the Academy of Our Lady of Peace in San Diego for 33 years. After winning a language scholarship two years ago, she continues to visit Italy, where she spent a month last summer in Bologna and Viareggio. She’s currently looking for a tango dance partner. … Sister Mary Hoffman (M.Ed. ’75) celebrated her 50th anniversary as a Daughter of Divine Charity and is busy enjoying her “golden years.”

UNDERGRADUATE ALUMNI
Michael Hall and wife Martha still have five children at home. In addition, five older children are pursuing careers and college degrees. The family spends lots of time at its cabin in Steamboat Springs, Colo., enjoying wildlife and hiking.
GRADUATE AND LAW SCHOOL ALUMNI
Pakaporn (Suvansarang) Andersen (M.Ed.) and husband Dale Andersen ’73 (M.A.) have moved back to California for good after following Dale’s career with the Federal Deposit Insurance Corp. through eight states. Paka is an in-terior designer and real estate broker. … The Rev. Gary Rye received a doctorate in sociology and anthropology in 1978 and a master’s degree in counseling psychology in 1992. His interests include the integration of psychology and the new sciences, for use in organizational development and continuing education.

1973
GRADUATE AND LAW SCHOOL ALUMNI
James Bostwick (J.D., LL.M. ’02) says he noticed “more women, students with cell phones, a huge library, more facilities, a bigger student body, remote parking and security guards” while getting his second degree from USD. He writes that he still handles appeals from his home office. … David Darugh (J.D.) was an attorney for the United States government for 30 years, finishing his career as chief counsel for the Department of Energy’s Savannah River Nuclear Site in Aiken, S.C. He and his wife, Gayle, are owners of the Beechwood Inn Bed and Breakfast in Clayton, Ga. … Robert Johnson (J.D.) bought a 42-acre ranch in Montana where he raises Tennessee walkers and Missouri foxtrotters. He married Patti Marmer on July 5, 2003, on the ranch. The couple also live in Monarch Beach, Calif. … Richard Paff (M.Ed.) retired in June after 32 years in public education. For the last 30 years, he taught at Hilltop Middle School in Chula Vista, Calif. He writes that he and his wife hope to do lots of traveling in their retirement years.

Russel Neuhart (M.A. ’83) received a doctorate in 2003 from Alliant International University. He is program manager for San Diego Regional Center, where he celebrated 10 years of service in 2004. He is working toward a state license in clinical psychology.
GRADUATE AND LAW SCHOOL ALUMNI
Jo Ann (Kavanagh) Ashby (M.Ed.) retired in 1993 from San Diego City Schools. She started the district’s program for autistic students. She enjoys volunteering for her church and for the visitors center in Bellingham, Wash., since retiring. … Telemac Chryssikos (J.D.) has three children. Eldest son Paul practices law in Philadelphia. Middle child Marybeth is a physical therapist and youngest son Tim is a senior at Swarthmore College. Telemac has been on the legal staff of Washington Gas and Light since 1980. … Howard Tarr (J.D.) has practiced intellectual property law since 1994.

UNDERGRADUATE ALUMNI
Robert Kenniston won Project Management Institute’s worldwide competition for “Project of the Year” for his work as director of operations, planning and management for the 2002 Olympic Winter Games. The institute has 120,000 members in 127 countries.
GRADUATE AND LAW SCHOOL ALUMNI
Linda Ortwein (M.Ed.) has been teaching for 30 years in positions ranging from special education to administration at elementary schools and middle schools. She has received teacher of the year awards three times and was a presenter at the mathematics council at the University of Wisconsin.

1976
UNDERGRADUATE ALUMNI
Angela Hammer (M.A. ’84) resigned from the Diocese of San Diego to assist her father and become the primary caregiver to her mother. She also works part time as a confirmation coordinator for her parish, Our Lady of Fatima, in San Clemente, Calif.
GRADUATE AND LAW SCHOOL ALUMNI
Mary Howell (J.D.) is a past member of the board of governors of the College of Community Association Lawyers. She also is current editor of the Journal of Community Association Law. … Jane (Sweeney) Rader (M.Ed.) and Mark Rader (M.Ed.) report that eldest son Gene is a United States Marine, stationed at Camp Pendleton. He is serving his second tour in Iraq and is in Fallujah. The couple stopped by USD during a vacation to San Diego and marveled at the school’s growth. “You have, however, maintained the school’s original beauty. Bravo to you,” writes Jane.

UNDERGRADUATE ALUMNI
Michelle Zappone had a successful career in sales and marketing with Bacardi Imports and the Levi Strauss Co. for 14 years, but felt something was missing. She returned to school in 1990 to pursue a career in nursing. She now works at the Cleveland Clinic Foundation as a neuroradiology nurse. She also did travel nursing for four years and took an assignment working for Scripps hospitals in San Diego from 1999 to 2003. She returned to Cleveland to be near family.
GRADUATE AND LAW SCHOOL ALUMNI
James Boone (M.Ed.) writes that after 36 years in public school administration, it has been wonderful to look back and rejoice over many accomplishments and great friendships along the way.  He was retired for three years but now is a car salesman in Carlsbad, Calif. … Mary Lee Lindquist (J.D.) has been in private practice for 24 years. The practice is limited to family law mediation and collaborative divorce and is located in Irvine, Calif. She has two children, ages 20 and 17, and has been performing in community theater for 11 years. … J. Darryl Nyznyk (J.D.) is president and chief executive officer of a real estate development company near Los Angeles. In his spare time, he is working on his second novel. He and his wife celebrated their 26th anniversary in June.

Michelle Pon Gurnee has been happily married for nine years. She lives on Windansea Beach in San Diego, plays tennis at the beach club and golfs at private clubs. She also writes that she travels extensively and dances up a storm.

Alice (Borlin) Cox is retired after a career as a biotechnician. She now raises German shepherds and Siamese cats, and has three houses.

Jay Sacks (J.D.) has been playing and singing with the Renaissance group Courtly Noyse and also sings with the Gregorian chant group Schola Pacifica, which just released its third compact disc. Jay spends his free time writing music. … John Steiner (J.D.) lives and works in Southern California and is an underwriting manager with a large asset-based lender. He has been married for 21 years; he and his wife have three sons. He recently attended his 25th reunion at USD and roomed with one of his former law school roommates. “I am so gratified to see the continued strides USD is making,” he writes. … Susan Winters-Brown (M.Ed.) and her family just completed a two-week rafting trip on the San Juan River in Utah. They recently acquired an Australian bearded dragon named Godzilla. Son Terran is in second grade and loves camping, swimming and reading.
