North American Free Trade Agreement

The North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) took effect on January 1, 1994. Since then, trade between the United States and Mexico has increased dramatically. The sources listed here contain information about NAFTA negotiations, the final  agreement, and its implementation.

Individual aspects of the NAFTA that have attracted attention and generated commentary include its dispute resolution  mechanism, investment and  intellectual property provisions, and side agreements on labor and the environment.

One NAFTA provision that is still quite controversial in the United States calls for the opening of U.S. roads to Mexican trucks and buses.
