The University of San Diego Symphony Orchestra

The University of San Diego Symphony Orchestra is one of the most active college-community orchestras in San Diego, with multiple performances on and off campus each semester at such distinguished events as the annual Kyoto Symposium, the annual Linda Vista Multi-Cultural Fair, and the Miramar Air Show for over ten thousand spectators. Under its Director Dr. Angela Yeung the orchestra has produced nine CD recordings and has performed in other major cities in the United States, among them Washington, DC, New York City, Boston, Pittsburgh, Chicago, Seattle, San Francisco, Portland, Phoenix and Tuzcan. In 2007, the University of San Diego Symphony Orchestra became the first American orchestra to join the Tijuana Youth Orchestra on a tour to Acambaro and Irapuato, Mexico. The orchestra has received guidance and great compliments from distinguished conductors such as Otto-Werner Müller, former Director of Orchestral Studies at The Julliard School of Music, and most recently, the world renowned Austrian conductor Nikolaus Harnoncourt.

All USD students, regardless of their major and minor, receive full or partial scholarships to take individual lessons on their orchestra instruments upon auditioning successfully with the USD Symphony each semester.

The University of San Diego Symphony Orchestra welcomes the participation of USD alumni, faculty, and staff as well as musicians from the San Diego community. With priority seating given to music majors at USD, performance opportunities are available for non-music majors and community members, including high school students with advanced musical training. Regular USD symphony rehearsals are held in Shiley Theatre at USD on Wednesday evenings from 7:15 to 9:45 pm during the academic year, with possible extra dress rehearsals immediately prior to a performance.

The USD Chamber Music Ensembles are student groups that also welcome the participation of non-USD students when positions are open. The various chamber groups perform at venues that are suitable for smaller ensembles, such as schools and community centers both in San Diego and other U.S. cities. Regular Chamber Music Ensemble rehearsals are held Tuesdays and Thursdays from 10:45 am to 12:05 pm during the fall and spring semesters. Rehearsals outside the regular class time may be arranged under special circumstances.

Instrumentalists interested in joining the USD Symphony and/or Chamber Music Ensembles can contact Angela Yeung at (619) 260-4106 or ayeung@sandiego.edu.
