Enhanced Student Faculty Interaction Fund
Description
The purpose of the Enhanced Student Faculty Interaction Fund is to foster academic experiences among faculty and students in order to enrich academic life at USD. Grants are non-competitive and are made on a first-come, first-served basis. The academic nature of the project must be the central feature and the project must foster a closer intellectual interaction between faculty member(s) and student(s). Proposals for student interactions with multiple faculty members from several disciplines are particularly encouraged. A proposal is to be a simple memo or e-mail message directed to the contact person (see below) and should include a description of the project, rationale for its academic value, an explanation of costs and their total, and the date(s) of the event/project. Turn-around time for proposals is rapid.
Funding Available
Awards may run from a small amount (unspecified) to a maximum of usually no more than $500 per project. The latest guidlines are available here as a PDF file

Faculty Research Grants
Description
Each year, approximately $500,000 is made available by the Office of the Provost to faculty members throughout the College and schools at USD under the heading of Faculty Research Grants (FRGs). These grants vary in their amounts and may include both actual cash grants and/or course release time. The decisions on when, how, and under what circumstances the FRGs are allotted are made by the deans of the individual academic units and vary according to guidelines set by each dean. The total amount available to each dean annually is announced in about March each year. Some deans begin awarding these funds immediately; others wait until later in the Spring or even Summer. Please check with your respective dean to learn more about FRGs and the guidelines set for your College or professional school.
The reporting form
is available here as a PDF file, and it must be filled out at the conclusion of the FRG; please forward one copy to your dean and one copy to Dr. Thomas Herrinton, Associate Provost.
International Opportunities Grants for Faculty
Description
The fundamental purpose of the International Opportunities Grant program is to "internationalize" the curriculum by exposing faculty to different cultures through foreign travel and by promoting research and scholarship abroad. The committee will evaluate proposals on the strength of their connection to the international mission of the university and to the perceived benefit towards increasing faculty members' international understanding and research programs. The committee will consider how the international experience is applicable to teaching and research, and will examine a trip's usefulness for internationalizing the curriculum and building a scholar's long-term international research agenda, including publications.
Selection Criteria
The primary criterion of judgment will be the excellence of the proposal and the thoughtfulness given to its applicability to teaching, research, and publication on international themes. Research scholars conducting ongoing investigation may apply for repeated support provided that they can demonstrate substantial progress on previous trips, evidence of publications, and a deepened understanding of other cultures and/or international problems.
Eligibility
All tenure-track and tenured USD faculty are eligible to apply.
Amounts of Funding
Total Funding Available: $40,000. The Committee could fund up to a maximum of $4,000 per person for each proposal (average funding for the last round of grant recipients was $1,850). Repeat funding is possible. In the event there are funds remaining, the committee will consider additional requests.
Application and Guidelines
Please access the application and guidelines and submit electronically to Dr. Carl Jubran, Chair, International Council.

Sabbaticals
Social Issues Committee
Description
Speakers, sponsored and co-sponsored events, ad hoc focus groups, collaborations across campus groups, and the substantive discussions at the Committee's round tables provide faculty with significant opportunities for developing partnerships, teaching, and campus service. Furthermore, the Committee's activities provide campus events that faculty often use as elements to extend topic development in their courses. The annual spring Social Issues Conference features a major speaker and workshops around the current theme. Faculty development opportunities also include a planning retreat, during which time they link with students, staff, and community members to assess the past year's work and plan for the forthcoming year.
Funding Available
A process exists for requesting funds and the maximum amount is generally $250.
