The USD TRIO Upward Bound Program is an academic experience that provides current students from Kearny High School and Hoover High School with pre-collegiate opportunities through advising, mentoring, and an intensive residential summer program.
Summer Program
During the summer, current Upward Bound students have the opportunity to participate in a residential academic program to be immersed in the college experience. The summer Upward Bound program includes:
Activities directed by professional USD staff members
Guidance, counseling, and tutoring provided by current college students as Resident Advisors.
Participation in up to 4 summer classes to prepare for the upcoming academic year
Educational and cultural field trips once a week such as SD Padre game, SD Zoo USC campus tour, Balboa Park, and Mission Bay Aquatics
Eligibility Requirements
To be eligible for Upward Bound, you must be:
A current freshman, sophomore or junior at Kearny High Educational Complex or Hoover High School
Current 8th graders (rising 9th graders) that will attend Kearny High or Hoover High their following academic year are encouraged to apply
Your family meets the government income guidelines...
OR Neither parent/guardian has earned a college degree in the U.S.
Program Requirements
To be considered in good standing as a participant in USD TRIO Upward Bound, we require our students to maintain contact with us by:
- Attending mandatory community meetings once a month after school.
- Attending one workshop, virtual event, or volunteer event each Fall and Spring semester. This totals to a minimum of two events throughout the academic year (excluding office hours), in addition to attending community meetings.
- Maintain a GPA of at least 2.5 or higher.
