10-15 hours / week during the Academic Year (flexible scheduling with some optional weekends)

College Mentors / Tutors must be current University of San Diego undergraduate students with Federal Work Study in their financial aid award, and may work only during the academic year.

Candidates must have:

• Ability to work with low-income and first-generation high school students.
• Academic support in a high school level core academic subjects (math, reading, writing, lab sciences, etc).
• Knowledge of college application process (UCs, CSUs, CommonApp) and FAFSA.
• Graphic design and social media experience is a plus.

Our College Mentors / Tutors provide academic support, group and individual tutoring, counseling, and mentoring to program participants from Kearny High Educational Complex and Hoover High School. All program participants are low-income, first-generation college bound high school students.

College Mentors / Tutors must:

• Be available for academic advising sessions with high school students (currently online Monday - Thursday, 4:00 PM - 5:30 PM, must be available for at least one day).
• Be encouraging and approachable to students.
• Help answer questions about college (applications, courses, financial aid, etc).
• Provide bi-weekly reports on student progress.
• Compile demographic information reports.
• Coordinate and file student information by cohort year and alphabetically for both physical and digital files.
• Assist in facilitating in-person educational, cultural, and/or professional development workshops and activities.
• Perform other duties as assigned by the Director, Assistant Director, or Retention Specialist.

The majority of work will be conducted on-campus at USD in UC 102. Academic support and tutoring services are currently provided virtually with office hours via Zoom from 4:00 PM - 5:30 PM Monday through Thursday. In-person support is conducted on a case by case basis at the school site or on-campus at USD. In some cases, we may hold Saturday sessions.

$16.30 / hour, up to maximum FWS award.

40 hours / week, overtime as needed

• Current undergraduate student with at least sophomore standing or recently graduated with an undergraduate degree from an accredited U.S. university.
• Strong academic record.
• RA / camp experience preferred.
• Experience or knowledge working with low-income, first-generation college bound high school students preferred.
• Prior experience as resident advisor or camp counselor desired.
• Valid Driver’s license preferred.

Under the supervision of the Upward Bound Head Resident Assistant, the Resident Assistant (RA) will be responsible for creating, providing, and maintaining a safe and empowering on-campus summer experience. RAs play a critical role during the UB summer program. Their responsibilities pertain to both the academic and social aspects of the summer experience. RAs will be responsible for assisting and implementing all cultural activities with student participants.

Note: RAs will be provided with a meal card and on-campus housing. RAs must stay overnight Sunday - Friday. This is a full-time temporary summer role.

RAs are expected to:

• Attend all pre-program training sessions (June 10-12, 2024).
• Closely monitor and mentor approximately 10-12 students per group (per RA). Gather students during UB programming sessions.
• Tutor / mentor students in assigned academic courses as needed during study hall sessions. Work closely with summer staff to assess student's academic, emotional, and social needs. Review participant files of assigned students as needed.
• Mentor students in regards to academic progress, daily class assignments / activities, and emotional / physical well-being.
• For gender-based emotional or physical complaints or problems, the male RAs will provide appropriate guidance to male students and the female RAs will provide appropriate guidance to female students.
• Conduct meetings with assigned student groups during designated times.
• Report any problems during program activities to the UB Core Team.
• Assist UB Core Team with planning, organizing, and conducting social and cultural events for daily student activities. Select and supervise daily activities, take responsibility for gathering and monitoring assigned students during this time.
• Request / attend student conferences for academic or behavioral difficulties.
• RAs must maintain strict confidentiality regarding staff and student concerns.
• RAs should NOT meet with students outside of Upward Bound programming during the duration of the summer program.

$18 / hour, 40 hours per week, seasonal NBB, overtime as needed

Total estimated pay: Up to $8,000 (includes estimated overtime)

• Weekly meal card provided (total value of $956.40 in on-campus dining dollars)
• On-campus dormitory provided during duration of summer program (note: overnight stay mandatory to supervise summer participants)

This job requires some weekends, checking in on Sunday evenings, and on-call responsibilities overnight.

June 10 - August 9, 2024

20-25 hours / week

The Summer Instructor is expected to teach at least two classes with 15-25 students each class, on-campus at the University of San Diego. Instructors will be expected to create their own syllabus with course goals and objectives. USD UB will provide previous summer program course syllabi for reference. Each course must reflect and be able to adapt to the unique needs of students. The instructor should make reasonable demands of students regarding daily assignments and final course requirements. This is a part-time temporary summer role.

Summer Course Subjects:

• College Seminar (Introduction to College Applications, Financial Aid, etc)
• Foreign Language
• Integrated Mathematics II & III
• Lab Sciences
• Public Speaking
• Elective (Art, Technology, Leadership, Dance, etc)

Summer Instructors are expected to:

• Attend all pre-program training sessions (June 10-12, 2024).
• Submit final course syllabus and course objectives by June 14, 2024.
• Distribute syllabus and shared objectives to students on the first day of classes on June 17, 2024.
• Responsible for the care and maintenance of all instructional materials in their possession.
• Attend weekly staff meetings, instructional meetings, and social / cultural activities as needed.
• Maintain daily student attendance and performance records in preparation for weekly staff meetings.
• Coordinate and execute daily lesson plans.
• Advise residential assistants (RAs) on activities and follow-ups needed for meeting students' academic and personal needs.
• Implement all program rules / policies and disciplinary procedures and maintain an on-going record of verbal warnings / consequences and written referrals.

• Prior experience teaching in a classroom environment, preferred grades 9-12.
• Teaching credential (or in the process of acquiring) in subject area(s) preferred.
• Undergraduate degree required.
• Bilingual preferred.
• Experience or knowledge working with low-income and first-generation college bound high school students desired.

Pay rate: $25-30 / hour, 20-25 hours per week, seasonal NBB (Monday - Thursday with paid prep time, two Saturdays required)

Total compensation: Up to $6,500
