Grandparents and Family Weekend

Explore the coast together on a relaxed hike through Annie’s Canyon and the San Elijo Lagoon. This easy, 2-mile round-trip outing follows a mostly flat trail and is ideal for grandparents, students, and all ability levels. Participants can enjoy scenic lagoon views and choose whether to add a short, optional slot canyon adventure. Outdoor Adventures student leaders and a catered box lunch with a choice of sandwich is included. Transportation can be provided from campus or you may meet us at the trailhead. Just a 30-minute drive from campus, this outing offers a simple, memorable way to connect across generations while enjoying the amazing outdoors that San Diego is known for.

What to Expect

  • 2-mile round-trip hike at an easy, conversational pace
  • Mostly flat trail, suitable for a wide range of abilities
  • Walk alongside the beautiful San Elijo Lagoon, home to birds, native plants, and coastal views
  • Optional slot canyon scramble through Annie’s Canyon Trail for those who want a short, fun challenge
  • Participants may choose to skip the slot canyon and enjoy the main trail instead

Logistics

  • About 30 minute drive from campus
  • Optional transportation provided from campus in University vans
  • Option to meet us at the trailhead if you prefer to drive yourself
  • Catered sandwich box lunch included to enjoy a casual meal after the hike

Good to Know

  • Closed-toe shoes recommended
  • Bring water, sun protection, and a sense of curiosity
  • Slot canyon section involves narrow passages and some light scrambling (completely optional)

$20 Hike & lunch (Meet us at the Trailhead at 10:30am and return to vehicles by 12:30pm)

$30 Transportation, Hike & Lunch (Meet us on campus at 10:00am and return by 1pm)
