Welcome to USD's IFC Recruitment FAQ page! As an IFC community, we remember how joining a fraternity can feel exciting yet overwhelming. We want to make sure that you feel as prepared as possible. Below is a list of commonly asked questions and helpful information regarding the IFC recruitment processes.
Recruitment Programs
Each semester, the Interfraternity Council hosts multiple pre-recruitment programs to provide additional information and opportunities for connection, including the below events:
Recruitment Orientation
(early to mid September & February): a program designed to clarify the formal recruitment process timeline, eligibility requirements, and related logistics for potential new members.
Recruitment Kickoff
(mid to late September & February): a program designed to help interested students meet representatives from all eight IFC fraternities at USD, ask questions about fraternity membership, and learn more about upcoming recruitment processes.
Other programs may include chapter presence at the Alcala Bazaar, parent/family information sessions, and more, pending scheduling and availability.
Basic Recruitment Information
Formal Recruitment is the process of a potential new member (PNM) meeting various IFC chapters and learning what they might want to get out of and contribute to the community, should they receive an invitation and choose to join a fraternity. Recruitment begins with a PNM orientation and all-IFC kickoff. Then, IFC chapters host their own chapter-specific recruitment events over the span of approximately two weeks.
Formal Recruitment is based on shared values and mutual selection; chapters may invite potential new members to attend recruitment events, and potential new members may choose which chapter events to attend. We highly encourage potential new members to enter into recruitment with an open mind and a sense of possibility for all fraternity chapters.
There are currently nine fraternities at the University of San Diego. One fraternity is a member organization of the Multicultural Greek Council, and eight fraternities are member organizations of the Interfraternity Council. Students interested in joining a fraternity are encouraged to consider all of their options across both Councils, which have different joining processes, membership costs, and brotherhood experiences.
