Imane Khalil, PhD is a professor of mechanical engineering at the University of San Diego. Dr. Khalil serves as the associate dean of graduate engineering programs. She was born in Beirut, Lebanon, and immigrated to the United States. Dr. Khalil earned her bachelor's and master's degrees in mechanical engineering at the University of California, San Diego, followed by the completion of her PhD in the same field in 2003.
During the period from 2004 to 2014, she made significant contributions during her tenure at Sandia National Laboratories. She initially worked as a scientist and later transitioned to managerial roles, overseeing various departments, including one responsible for structural analysis for the Mars rover, Curiosity, which landed in 2012.
In 2014, Dr. Khalil joined the University of San Diego as an assistant professor of mechanical engineering. Her research primarily focuses on numerical methods applied to areas such as solid and fluid mechanics, thermal hydraulics, reactor safety, and uncertainty quantification applications. Additionally, she collaborates on research projects with the American University of Beirut, expanding her academic reach.
Dr. Khalil's expertise and dedication to her field have earned her the ASME Fellow award in 2019. In February 2023, she achieved a significant milestone by co-authoring, alongside Professor Issam Lakkis from the American University of Beirut, the textbook "Computational Fluid Dynamics: An Introduction to Modeling and Applications," which was published by McGraw Hill.
