At the University of San Diego's Changemaker Hub, we believe in the power of hands-on community engagement. Our Direct Service programs offer students meaningful, consistent opportunities to connect with our local San Diego community, address real-world challenges, and make a tangible impact alongside our community partners.
To make getting involved as easy as possible, we send out our Direct Service Newsletter every Monday. This newsletter features a curated list of all the week's upcoming volunteer programs. How can I get involved?
Bayside Food Distribution Program
Join the weekly food distribution program at Bayside Community Center! Their mission is to empower our diverse Linda Vista community to improve its quality of life through services, education, and advocacy. Fridays 11:30am–1:30pm. Transportation provided.
Brunch Club
We partnered with PATH San Diego, an organization dedicated to helping individuals, families, and communities end homelessness. PATH San Diego helps people find permanent housing and provides services to help them maintain their homes stably. Join us weekly to serve Brunch to their temporary residents. Saturdays, 10:30am–12:30pm. Transportation provided.
Pancakes Serving Up Hope
Every other Saturday during the semester, we serve freshly made pancakes topped with our folks’ choices of butter, fruit, and chocolate chips! We are aware that we cannot solve the issue of homelessness downtown only through providing food; the program builds relationships and trust with the families and veterans in need. We aim to humanize folks who have been marginalized and mistreated in the San Diego community. Pancakes SUH serves as a platform for people who are looking for volunteer opportunities and resource agencies that assist those who are in need. Every other Saturdays, 9:30am–1:30pm. Transportation provided.
Rachel’s Night Shelter & Migrant Ministry at OLG Parish
Every few weeks, USD students and University Ministry staff prepare and deliver dinner to residents at both Rachel’s Night Shelter and Our Lady of Guadalupe Parish. Rachel’s Night Shelter is an emergency shelter for women who are unhoused in San Diego and looking for short-term, supportive, and safe housing. Our Lady of Guadalupe Migrant Ministry offers meals and shelter to migrant men who either have no destination or are seeking opportunities to travel to their next destination.
