The Department of Mathematics offers a variety of ways to get involved; ranging from Math Club to student employment opportunities to fun social events. All students are welcome to join!
Join Math Club
USD's Math Club is student-led and hosts regular events in the department and around campus. Math Club aims to bring folks together to learn more about the benefits of mathematics while creating and building a stronger sense of community in both the math department and USD academics as a whole. All students are welcome to join!

Student Employment Opportunities
Every semester, the mathematics department hires students to become math graders, tutors, and near peer course mentors. Please see the job description and how to apply below.
A math grader is an undergraduate student who will be grading assignments for their assigned math course and instructor. Students must have previously taken a math course, preferably the course they are assigned to. Students should feel comfortable with the material they are grading for to provide constructive feedback and partial points. Math graders will be paid for the number of hours assigned to their course(s). Grading policies are dependent on the assigned course and instructor.
Key responsibilities include:
- Grading assignments on time and within the agreed and specified work hours.
- Contacting and coordinating with their assigned professor for grading policies and questions regarding their position. Grading policies will be dependent and vary between courses and professors.
We hire math graders at the end of each semester for the following semester. If you are interested in applying or have any questions, please contact math@sandiego.edu.
A tutor at the Math Learning Center (MLC) offers drop-in assistance for a variety of math classes through Calculus II. As a tutor, you will be answering questions from peers as they come into the center during your scheduled hours. Additionally, you will participate in a professional development course designed to help you become a better tutor and to help you better understand how people learn mathematics.
If you are interested in applying or have any questions, please contact Math Learning Center Director, Hayley Milbourne, PhD - hmilbourne@sandiego.edu.
A Near Peer Course Mentor (NPCM) is an undergraduate student who will be associated with a section (or possibly two sections) of one of a lower division mathematics course. The NPCM will work closely with the instructor and with the students to increase student success. The NPCM will be paid for 4.5 hours of work per week, that will include time in the classroom, time preparing to meet with the students or attend class, time meeting with the course instructor, and the time leading problem-solving session for students. There will also be a paid training session.
We envision a collaborative partnership between the NPCM and the instructor, where each can learn from the perspectives of the other. At times during class, students will work in groups on more challenging problems. During these times, both the NPCM and the instructor will circulate throughout the room and assist the students as needed. The NPCMs will build relationships with the students and the students will know that the NPCM knows the instructor, how the instructor teaches and what concepts the instructor emphasizes. The NPCM will also provide feedback to the instructor on student difficulties, as students are often more comfortable asking questions and sharing challenges with a near peer than with an instructor.
We hire NPCMs at the end of each semester for the following semester. If you are interested in applying or have any questions, please contact Hayley Milbourne, PhD - hmilbourne@sandiego.edu.
Compete in the Putnam Competition
The William Lowell Putnam Mathematical Competition, offered the first Saturday of December of each year, is sponsored by the Mathematical Association of America and is free and open to all undergraduates in the United States and Canada, regardless of major. Students have successfully represented USD in this prestigious competition.
We offer the Mathematical Problem Solving Seminar (Math 395) every fall semester to prepare our students for solving Putnam problems.
