French and Francophone Studies

Studying the language and culture of France

French and Francophone Studies at USD develops students' cross-cultural understanding and communicative proficiency in French through the study of current French society and culture.

A humanistic, lively, modern language encountered not only in gastronomy, fashion and travel, but also in industry (from aerospace to biotechnology to electronics), the sciences, business and more, French is also one of the official languages of both the United Nations and the European Union.

French thinkers have traditionally been in the avant-garde of intellectual life, which makes a working knowledge of this language invaluable to scholars in all fields, just as it is indispensable for teachers, translators, writers and diplomats.

French is also the only language, alongside English, that is taught on every continent in the world.
