The English Department of the University of San Diego believes that if we teach literature as a living subject in its historicity, diversity, traditions, and techniques, students will improve the analytical and expressive vitality of their own writing as they give voice to their understanding of literature. In the process, students will broaden and deepen their knowledge of the world, past and present, by increasing their mastery of the language in which the literature we teach is expressed.
