The Communication Studies Major & Minor
Revised for the 2006-2008 Undergraduate Bulletin
The Programs
Course requirements in the Communication Studies major have been revised for the 2006-2008 Undergraduate Bulletin. Beginning in fall, 2007, students who declare the Comm. Studies major and current majors who re-declare the major will be adopting the new course requirements. There are three principal revisions to the major requirements included for the 2006-2008 Bulletin:
1. Three upper-division courses are required: Comm. 300 (Human Comm. Theory), Comm. 336 (Comm. Criticism), and Comm. 365 (Comm. Investigations).
2. Majors will pursue one of four areas of concentrated, upper-division study; the speech and media emphases no longer exist.
3. Comm. Studies majors are not required to complete a minor field of study.
The lower-division core requirements remain unchanged; all majors will be required to complete Comm. 101 (Intro. to Comm.), 103 (Public Speaking), 130 (Intro. Media Studies), and 220 (Intro. Media Writing).
Students who minor in Comm. Studies must complete (a) Comm. 101 (Intro. to Comm.); (b) either Comm. 103 (Public Speaking), 130, (Intro. to Media Studies), or Comm. 220 (Intro. Media Writing); and (c) 12 units of upper-division coursework to be selected in consultation with a faculty advisor.
Students who are considering a Comm. Studies major and have questions about the revised requirements are encouraged to meet with their Comm. Studies course instructor or with the Department Chair. Students who have declared the CS major within the last year are strongly encouraged to meet their academic advisor for guidance: re-declaring the major in Fall 2006 may benefit some students who declared the major in Fall 2005 or Spring 2006.
