What is Research?
Research is a systematic investigation designed to extend the knowledge of what is already known of the physical, biological, or social world. At its core, it's a creative, collaborative, and iterative process. It begins with a question, grows through exploration, and leads to insights that can change how we understand the world.
Why Does it Matter?
Engaging in undergraduate research helps you:
- Develop critical thinking, communication, and problem-solving skills
- Gain hands-on experience in your field that sets you apart
- Contribute to knowledge that improves lives
- Strengthen graduate school and job applications
- Build close mentoring relationships with faculty
How to Get Involved
Students can begin by exploring the following options:
Attend OUR Events
The Office of Undergraduate Research hosts frequent workshops and information sessions about undergraduate research opportunities. Follow @usdour on Instagram to stay up to date with us!
Connect with USD Faculty
Meet with your LLC/TLC/Academic Advisor or a professor you admire! Let them know that you are interested in undergraduate research. They may be available to mentor you or refer you to someone who is!
Use OUR-Search
If you don't know a faculty member in your area of interest, the Office of Undergraduate Research (OUR) created a tool, the OUR-SEARCH database, to help you find one! OUR-SEARCH allows students to express their interest in research and provides a list of faculty seeking students to join their research.
Explore Funding Programs at USD
USD offers students structured pathways that are available to fund their research! These include:
- STAR and BURST Scholars Program
- McNair Scholars Program
- Beckman Scholars Program
- Keck Undergraduate Humanities Research Fellows Program
