Student and employee commuting comprises 27% of USD’s total carbon footprint. There are multiple modes of transportation that can help contribute to reducing USD's impact on the environment.

Carpool Spaces

There are more than 75 carpool spaces on campus for commuter students or employees who travel to school with two or more people of legal driving age in the vehicle. Carpool spaces are located in the Mission Structure, Law School Lot, Hughes East Lot, Olin Lot, and the Institute for Peace and Justice Garage (see the carpool space map).  Carpool spaces are reserved solely for vehicles displaying carpool permits Monday through Friday, between 7:00am - 10:00am.

Bike Library

Want a bike for the day, the weekend, or the semester? The free Torero Bike Library offers bikes for the day, weekend or semester.  These are for registered students and faculty to use locally.  The Bike Library will also provide you with a helmet and U-lock to help you enjoy your planned outing and travel.

To learn more about the Torero Bike Library, call us at (619) 260-7777, email, or stop by the Public Safety Department located in the Hughes Administration Building, Room 150.

EV Charging Stations

Electric Vehicle charging stations are located across campus to accommodate the growing market for electric and hybrid vehicles. The charging stations are located in the Main Parking Structure, the IPJ Parking Structure, Manchester Garage, and the Vistas Parking Lot.

USD offers a free tram to all students, employees, and guests. During the regular semester, the tram runs Monday through Friday, between the hours of 7:00am - 11:00pm. The tram runs in circular loops around campus throughout the day and also offers service to and from Old Town Transit Center during the morning and afternoon/evening hours. For more information, please visit the Tram Information Page.

Bike Parking On Campus

USD worked with Park-a-Bike to install new bike racks as a two phase upgrade to increase bike parking and bike safety on campus. The increase in bike parking spaces is to encourage students and staff to commute to campus through cycling and alternative transportation. Review bike safety tips before you ride.

Fresh Air Permits

To encourage the use of alternate transportation, Parking Services has free Fresh Air Permits available for employees. These permits allow up to sixteen days per semester of free parking on campus for those who otherwise use alternative transportation (carpool, bike, bus, train or trolley).

USD has partnered with SANDAG to bring iCommute to students, faculty, and staff. Want to see if there are USD community members in your area to carpool to campus? Or want a bike buddy? Visit the iCommute for information on benefits and how to sign up!
