What is the goal of Student Support Services (SSS)?

Student Support Services aims to promote retention, graduation, and academic success among first-generation, low-income, students who demonstrate continuous need for support, and or students with a learning difference.

Who qualifies to be part of Student Support Services?
  • Student Support Services provide holistic support to undergraduate students who are first-generation, low-income, students who demonstrate continuous need for support, and/or who have documented disabilities. Support and services can range from Academic Advising to Financial literacy.
  • An application must be submitted online to be considered for the program.
I am not a first-year, but I am interested in applying to SSS. Is it too late?

No, it is not too late! We have rolling admissions and accept individuals who are first-year, sophomores, or juniors.

What services does SSS provide?
  • Academic Advising
  • One-on-one or Group Tutoring
  • FAFSA/ Financial Aid Guidance
  • Computer Lab/Study Space
  • Social and Cultural Activities
What are the differences between Student Support Services and Summer Bridge?

Summer Bridge is a week-long orientation program hosted by the Student Support Services department and is only available to incoming first-year and transfer students.

How long does the application process take?

The application process takes approximately 2-3 weeks.

How many hours do I need to commit to the program per semester?

Participants must meet a total of 15 hours per semester (30 hours in an academic year). Participation hours can be obtained through:

  1. Meeting with your designated Retention Specialist.
  2. Studying in our space
  3. Attending workshops
  4. Attending Cultural Activities
  5. Tutoring
Does SSS support undocumented students?

Yes, we can assist undocumented/dreamer students. Please get in touch with us for more information.

What is the difference between a Torero Connect Counselor (TCC) and Retention Specialist?

Every new undergraduate or transfer student is assigned a Torero Connect Counselor (TCC). TCCs support students with a wide range of non-academic needs, including financial aid, billing, course registration, and connecting them to campus resources. As your Retention Specialist, we provide all the support listed above plus additional services such as academic advising, personal and career coaching, and ongoing guidance throughout your entire journey at USD.

When is the SSS Office Open? Does SSS remain open during summer or intersession?

The SSS office is open for students 9:00 AM - 7:00 PM Monday through Thursday and 9:00 AM - 4:00 PM on Fridays. We remain open during summer and intersession with alternate hours.
