Civil discourse is a respectful and constructive way to discuss public issues and exchange views, with the goal of promoting understanding and expanding knowledge. It can help people bridge divides and make informed decisions that are important for citizens and governments.
What are effective ways to practice civil discourse?
- Respect all perspectives
- Establish a collaborative goal
- Get curious
- Try to understand the other person’s point of view, before sharing your own
- Tell a story…people tend to listen better to stories than opinions/points of view
What distress tolerance skills can I use to contribute to a civil discourse?
- Observe your feelings/reactions to others
- Recognize and acknowledge your feelings
- Pause and take a breath. Don’t react right away
- Managing your feelings (Distress Tolerance!)
Who are the CDAs (Civil Discourse Ambassadors)?
The Civil Discourse Ambassador (CDA) team aims to significantly enhance civil discourse and student engagement across political and ideological differences at the University of San Diego. Their work will be instrumental in helping fellow students engage constructively with complex issues, especially in the current polarized climate and the upcoming presidential election. Catch them at various events throughout the year wearing their royal purple shirts!
